No Tishrei de 5736 (תשל"ו) o Rebe disse três maamarim seguidos. O primeiro, na véspera de Rosh Hashaná: o maamar de Erev Rosh Hashaná (ד"ה יום טוב של ראש השנה שחל להיות בשבת). O segundo, no segundo dia de Rosh Hashaná: o maamar de Zeh Hayom

O eixo comum

O eixo é המשך תרס"ו do Rebe Rashab, lido dentro do mesmo calendário.

  1. Em 5666 (תרס"ו) Rosh Hashaná caiu em Shabat. Em 5736 (תשל"ו) caiu em Shabat de novo.
  2. O המשך תרס"ו abre com o maamar ד"ה יום טוב של ראש השנה שחל להיות בשבת — exatamente o título do maamar de Erev Rosh Hashaná.
  3. Logo depois vem no Hemshech o E Zeh Hayom cita esse maamar por nome (nota 19: המשך תרס"ו ע' טז [כג]).

Zeh Hayom cita נח,א (nota 19).

  1. פנימיות ועצמיות התענוג (Erev Rosh Hashaná, ot ד — "ot", אות, é a seção do maamar).

  1. Muda a pergunta.
  3. Coloca o homem no centro.

A nota 20 de Shuva Israel remete à página do próprio folheto; a nota 29 diz "ראה מאמר הקודם ד"ה זה היום". Ligação forte e assinada.
  2. É מוגה (revisado pelo Rebe); Erev Rosh Hashaná e Zeh Hayom são הנחה בלתי מוגה, anotação não revisada.

שופר o maamar inteiro gira nele zero vezes no corpo zero vezes

Fontes compartilhadas

  1. Zeh Hayom, ot א (linhas 1–16 do corpo).
  3. Zeh Hayom, ot ב–ג (a resposta: Adam; e תחלה x ראש). Agora o argumento tem chão.
  7. Shuva Israel, §17–19 (corpo do maamar, linhas 17–18).
  8. Zeh Hayom, ot ז–ח (os três níveis; o עדן que só se revela na תחיית המתים).
  9. Zeh Hayom, ot ט (o fecho, que volta à pergunta do ot א). Releia agora o ot א.

Ficha do maamar

O fio do maamar

  11. (ו) O Tzemach Tzedek nota dois versículos que parecem se contradizer: "שבתון זכרון תרועה" (uma lembrança de toque) e "יום תרועה יהיה לכם" (um dia de toque real). A Guemará resolve: o primeiro fala do Shabat, o segundo do dia de semana.

Shofar e a ligação Infinito-mundo

PARCIAL.

Por meio do shofar" (Guemará, Rosh Hashaná).

Ficha do maamar

O fio do maamar

Conceitos-chave

Onde o estudo costuma travar

Shofar e a ligação Infinito-mundo

A palavra "שופר" não aparece nenhuma vez no texto principal do Rebe (B_texto.txt).

Do aperto clamei a D'us... Ele me respondeu com amplidão."

Ficha do maamar

O fio do maamar

Shofar e a ligação Infinito-mundo

Israel, mesmo tendo pecado, continua sendo Israel."

The three maamarim of Tishrei 5736

Study summaries — Erev Rosh Hashanah, second day of Rosh Hashanah, Shabbat Shuvah

The three maamarim of Tishrei 5736: are they one hemshech?

In Tishrei of 5736 (תשל"ו) the Rebbe said three maamarim (מאמרים, discourses of Chassidus) one after the other. The first, on the eve of Rosh Hashanah: the Erev Rosh Hashanah maamar (Yom Tov shel Rosh Hashanah shechal lihyot beShabbat — דבור המתחיל יום טוב של ראש השנה שחל להיות בשבת). The second, on the second day of Rosh Hashanah: the Zeh Hayom maamar (Zeh Hayom Techilat Maasecha — דבור המתחיל זה היום תחלת מעשיך). The third, on Shabbat Shuvah: the Shuvah Yisrael maamar The question of this study is whether the three form a hemshech (המשך) — a series of maamarim said as a continuation of one another, numbered as one set.

Short answer (3 lines)

They are not a formal hemshech (the Rebbe did not number them as a series), but they are also not three loose subjects. From Zeh Hayom to Shuvah Yisrael the link is strong and explicit: in the Shabbat Shuvah maamar the Rebbe cites Zeh Hayom by name ("in the previous maamar, דבור המתחיל זה היום, said this Rosh Hashanah of this year, תשל"ו") and continues precisely the theme of bittul (ביטול), the nullification of one's own reality, which comes from Zeh Hayom. From Erev Rosh Hashanah to Zeh Hayom the link is structural, not textual: the Erev Rosh Hashanah maamar never mentions "זה היום", but the two are, in order, the first two maamarim of the Hemshech 5666 (המשך תרס"ו) of the Rebbe Rashab — and 5736 repeated the calendar of 5666 (Rosh Hashanah on Shabbat).

The common axis

The axis is Hemshech 5666 (המשך תרס"ו) of the Rebbe Rashab, read inside the same calendar.

  1. In 5666 (תרס"ו) Rosh Hashanah fell on Shabbat. In 5736 (תשל"ו) it fell on Shabbat again.
  2. The המשך תרס"ו opens with the maamar דבור המתחיל יום טוב של ראש השנה שחל להיות בשבת — exactly the title of the Erev Rosh Hashanah maamar.
  3. Right afterwards comes in the Hemshech the דבור המתחיל זה היום תחלת מעשיך — exactly the title of Zeh Hayom. And Zeh Hayom cites that maamar by name (note 19: המשך תרס"ו ע' טז [כג]).
  4. Further on in the Hemshech comes the דבור המתחיל שובה ישראל — the title of the Shabbat Shuvah maamar. And Shuvah Yisrael cites "המשך תרס"ו בהמאמר שלפני דבור המתחיל שובה ישראל" (note 19 of Shuvah Yisrael: ע' יג) — that is, the very maamar of תרס"ו on which Zeh Hayom is based.
  5. Therefore: the Rebbe is walking through the Hemshech תרס"ו on the same dates on which it was originally said. That is the real spine of the three.

Beyond that, all three are from the same cycle of Tishrei 5736, in this order: eve of Rosh Hashanah (Erev Rosh Hashanah) → 2nd day of Rosh Hashanah (Zeh Hayom) → Shabbat Shuvah (Shuvah Yisrael).

Another axis, smaller but real: Likutei Torah, Derushim leRosh Hashanah. Erev Rosh Hashanah rests on נו,א and cites נז,ב (note 62). Zeh Hayom cites נח,א (note 19). These are consecutive pages of the same place in Likutei Torah — the two maamarim explain the same block of the Alter Rebbe.

Conceptual theme shared by all three: something exceedingly high, separate from the world, which comes down here only through the avodah (עבודה, the service) of man. In the Erev Rosh Hashanah maamar that "something" is the ta'anug (תענוג, delight) of Shabbat, and what brings it down is the Torah (the pesukim). In Zeh Hayom it is the level ("bechinah", בחינת) of "תחלה", and what brings it down is the avodah of Israel. In Shuvah Yisrael it is the level of "ישראל" in the soul, and what brings it down is teshuvah (תשובה, return) with words.

What Erev Rosh Hashanah prepares for Zeh Hayom

The Erev Rosh Hashanah maamar sets up the vocabulary that Zeh Hayom uses without explaining again.

  1. פנימיות ועצמיות התענוג — the inwardness and essence of delight (Erev Rosh Hashanah, ot ד — "ot", אות, is the section of the maamar). Here it is taught that on Rosh Hashanah everything returns to its root, and that this is aroused only from the essence, not from an external revelation. Zeh Hayom needs exactly this in order to say that "תחלה" is higher than "ראש".
  2. מצוה כללית / חודש תשרי משובע בכל — an all-inclusive mitzvah, and the month of Tishrei as satiated with everything (Erev Rosh Hashanah, ot ג). It is established that Tishrei nourishes the whole year. Zeh Hayom assumes this when it speaks of Rosh Hashanah as the origin of the year.
  3. The model "high → must come down" (Erev Rosh Hashanah, ot ה). There: the mitzvah only arouses the light above; only the Torah brings it down, אורות בכלים, lights within vessels. In Zeh Hayom the same structure reappears under another name: the "תחלה" is separate, and only a thin thread links it to "מעשיך".
  4. מקדש and מדינה — the Sanctuary and the province within each Jew (Erev Rosh Hashanah, ot ז). It is the same movement as the thin thread of Zeh Hayom — from the innermost point out to the external faculties.
  5. The year on Shabbat. The Erev Rosh Hashanah maamar explains why in 5736 the shofar is not sounded. Zeh Hayom does not repeat this; it can already speak of the day without dealing with the shofar. (Indeed, "שופר" does not appear even once in the body of Zeh Hayom.)

Honesty: none of this is a citation. It is preparation of language and of atmosphere, not a declared continuation.

What Zeh Hayom adds over Erev Rosh Hashanah

  1. It changes the question. Erev Rosh Hashanah asks about the mitzvah of the day (shofar or no shofar). Zeh Hayom asks about the day itself (why "תחלת מעשיך" if it is the second day?).
  2. It introduces the distinction תחלה versus ראש, which does not exist in the Erev Rosh Hashanah maamar. This is the central novelty of Zeh Hayom, and it comes from תרס"ו.
  3. It places man at the center. In the Erev Rosh Hashanah maamar, the subject is the day (Shabbat) and the mitzvah. In Zeh Hayom, the subject is אדם, man — Adam Harishon and the soul of every Jew. "בשביל ישראל" in both senses.
  4. It brings the Maggid of Mezritch (4 mentions in Zeh Hayom; zero in the Erev Rosh Hashanah maamar) — the choice of Israel before any reason.
  5. It brings the Gan/Eden model, נהר דינור, and the two kinds of bittul. This has no parallel in the Erev Rosh Hashanah maamar.
  6. It flows out into תורה תפלה ותשובה — Torah, prayer and teshuvah (Zeh Hayom, ot ו and the closing: "ותהיה שנת תורה תפלה ותשובה"). It is this outflow that Shuvah Yisrael will pick up.

What Shuvah Yisrael closes and carries forward

  1. It cites Zeh Hayom literally. In the body of the Shabbat Shuvah maamar: "ונתבאר גם במאמר הקודם (דבור המתחיל זה היום שנאמר בראש השנה שנה זו, תשל"ו) שלימוד התורה צריך להיות על ידי קדימת הביטול של המציאות האישית של האדם הלומד". Note 20 of Shuvah Yisrael refers to the page of the pamphlet itself; note 29 says "ראה מאמר הקודם ד"ה זה היום". A strong and signed link.
  2. It is מוגה (mugah, reviewed by the Rebbe); Erev Rosh Hashanah and Zeh Hayom are הנחה בלתי מוגה (hanachah bilti mugah), an unreviewed transcript. So Shuvah Yisrael is the clean, authorized version of the passage that in Zeh Hayom is difficult.
  3. It takes up again Rabbi Zeira and the hundred fasts — the same example of bittul before rising to a new level, which in Zeh Hayom appears in the block of Gan Eden and of avodah.
  4. It gives the key that is missing in Zeh Hayom: there, bittul is the price for rising a rung. In Shuvah Yisrael, teshuvah is no rung at all — it is דילוג (dilug), a leap. It comes from "בחינת ישראל", the level of "Israel" in the soul, which sin does not touch. That is, Shuvah Yisrael answers: where does the strength for all this bittul come from?
  5. It closes the arc of Tishrei: the Shabbat of Shuvah repairs all the Shabbatot of the past year and elevates those of the year to come — returning to Shabbat, which was the subject of the Erev Rosh Hashanah maamar.
  6. It carries forward to the Geulah (גאולה, the Redemption): "ישראל תשובין הן ומיד עושין תשובה נגאלין", and the third Beit Hamikdash. The Erev Rosh Hashanah maamar too ended with the shofar of Mashiach (pesukei Shofrot). The two extremes touch each other.

Table: the theme in the three maamarim

Theme Erev Rosh Hashanah (ער"ה) Zeh Hayom (יום ב' דר"ה) Shuvah Yisrael (שבת תשובה)
המשך תרס"ו cited at the end: "סיום וחותם המשך תרס"ו", ע' תקמו basis of the maamar: ד"ה זה היום תרס"ו, ע' טז, יט, כ "המאמר שלפני ד"ה שובה ישראל", ע' יב-יג
Rosh Hashanah on Shabbat central subject (to sound or not to sound) almost absent (שבת only 1 time in the body) not a subject; Shabbat returns as Shabbat Shuvah
שופר the whole maamar turns on it zero times in the body zero times
תענוג / עונג the axis: "וקראת לשבת עונג", שופר = שפר appears in the עדן (essential delight, only at the תחיית המתים) not an axis
ביטול implicit (קול פשוט, בהמה, אדם ובהמה תושיע) explicit axis: 15 occurrences, two kinds of bittul presupposed, and then surpassed by the דילוג
תורה versus מצוה axis of ot ה: only the Torah brings אורות בכלים Torah comes down, prayer and teshuvah go up teshuvah gives strength to Torah and to the mitzvot
תשובה almost absent 21 occurrences; תורה תפלה ותשובה at the close the sole subject of the maamar
Likutei Torah, Derushim leRosh Hashanah נו,א and נז,ב נח,א לקו"ת on שובה ישראל
Maggid of Mezritch 0 4 mentions (בשביל ישראל צדיקים) 0 in the body (only in the editor's ביאור)
Geulah and the third Beit Hamikdash
Status of the text הנחה בלתי מוגה הנחה בלתי מוגה הוגה by the Rebbe

Shared sources

Shared by all three: - המשך תרס"ו (Erev Rosh Hashanah: 1 mention; Zeh Hayom: 3; Shuvah Yisrael: 2). It is the only source that all three cite and that, beyond that, defines the order in which the three were said. This is the strongest proof that there is an axis here, and not coincidence. - Likutei Torah of the Alter Rebbe (Erev Rosh Hashanah: 8; Zeh Hayom: 6; Shuvah Yisrael: 5). In the first two they are neighboring pages of the Derushim leRosh Hashanah (נו-נח). - Tanya (Erev Rosh Hashanah: 2; Zeh Hayom: 5; Shuvah Yisrael: 4).

Not shared — and that too tells us something: - Or HaTorah / Tzemach Tzedek: Erev Rosh Hashanah 4, Zeh Hayom 7, Shuvah Yisrael 0. Erev Rosh Hashanah and Zeh Hayom are maamarim of "text analysis" (they resolve contradictions in pesukim and in maamarim); Shuvah Yisrael is more direct. - Rambam: Erev Rosh Hashanah 2, Zeh Hayom 1, Shuvah Yisrael 5. Shuvah Yisrael needs the halachah of teshuvah; the other two do not. - Zohar: Erev Rosh Hashanah 1, Zeh Hayom 2, Shuvah Yisrael 5. Shuvah Yisrael is the most "Zoharic" of the three - Maggid of Mezritch: only in Zeh Hayom.

What this shows: Erev Rosh Hashanah and Zeh Hayom share the apparatus (Likutei Torah + Or HaTorah + Hemshech תרס"ו) but do not cite each other. Zeh Hayom and Shuvah Yisrael share less apparatus, but cite each other directly. That is: between Erev Rosh Hashanah and Zeh Hayom there is a kinship of sources; between Zeh Hayom and Shuvah Yisrael, a kinship of content.

Recommended order of study for understanding Zeh Hayom

Do not begin with the whole Erev Rosh Hashanah maamar. Begin with Zeh Hayom, step out to Erev Rosh Hashanah only where Zeh Hayom presupposes it, and end in Shuvah Yisrael.

  1. Zeh Hayom, ot א (lines 1–16 of the body). Only to fix the question: "the beginning of Your works" versus "a remembrance of the first day". Do not try to understand yet, just hold on to the contradiction.
  2. Erev Rosh Hashanah, ot ג–ד. Reason: here are מצוה כללית, חודש תשרי משובע בכל and, above all, פנימיות ועצמיות התענוג — "on Rosh Hashanah everything returns to its root, and this is aroused only from the essence, not from a revelation". Without that idea, the "תחלה above ראש" of Zeh Hayom sounds like a play on words.
  3. Zeh Hayom, ot ב–ג (the answer: Adam; and תחלה versus ראש). Now the argument has ground under it.
  4. Erev Rosh Hashanah, ot ה. Reason: it is the same scheme as Zeh Hayom in an easier version — something exceedingly high (the ta'anug of Shabbat) which by itself stays above, and needs the Torah in order to come down, אורות בכלים. Read it and say to yourself: "this is what Zeh Hayom will call the thin thread between תחלה and מעשיך".
  5. Zeh Hayom, ot ד (Gan and Eden, the river that links and separates). Now Gan Eden is not a digression: it is the working model of "separate yet connected".
  6. Zeh Hayom, ot ה–ו (the two bitulim; bittul in Torah, prayer and teshuvah).
  7. Shuvah Yisrael, §17–19 (the body of the maamar, lines 17–18). Decisive reason: it is the Rebbe himself summarizing ot ו of Zeh Hayom — and in a מוגה text, cleaner. If ot ו of Zeh Hayom got stuck, this paragraph of Shuvah Yisrael unlocks it.
  8. Zeh Hayom, ot ז–ח (the three levels; the עדן that is revealed only at the תחיית המתים).
  9. Zeh Hayom, ot ט (the closing, which returns to the question of ot א). Now reread ot א.
  10. Erev Rosh Hashanah, ot ז–ח — optional, to see the same movement "from within outward" (מקדש → מדינה) with a different image.
  11. The whole of Shuvah Yisrael, last. Reason: it gives you the answer that Zeh Hayom does not give — where the strength for all this bittul comes from. Answer: from the בחינת ישראל, by way of דילוג.

One sentence from each maamar that sums up the set

Erev Rosh Hashanah — "כיון שיום השבת עצמו פועל מה שנפעל על ידי תקיעת שופר בראש השנה שחל בשאר ימות השבוע" (ot ח). "Because the day of Shabbat itself accomplishes that which is accomplished through the sounding of the shofar on a Rosh Hashanah that falls on the other days of the week."

"As is explained in the maamar 'Zeh Hayom Techilat Maasecha' of 5666: 'beginning' is above the level of 'head'."

"And it was explained also in the previous maamar (the maamar 'Zeh Hayom', said on Rosh Hashanah of this year, 5736) that the study of Torah must be preceded by the nullification of the personal reality of the one who studies."

The three together: the day by itself already contains everything — so the Erev Rosh Hashanah maamar — because the day is "beginning", separate and exceedingly high, as Zeh Hayom teaches; and the strength to draw that beginning down to us is bittul, which becomes a leap in teshuvah, as Shuvah Yisrael concludes.

This is a study summary of the maamar (מאמר), not a passage from the maamar itself.

In one line

In the Mikdash (מקדש), the Temple, they would blow the shofar (שופר) on a Rosh Hashanah that falls on Shabbat. Outside the Temple, in the Medina (מדינה), they would not blow. Why? Because Shabbat itself, with its delight (ta'anug, תענוג), already accomplishes what the shofar would accomplish. And even so, we still say the verses of Malchuyot, Zichronot and Shofrot. Because only Torah brings that light down here, into the world.

Fact sheet

The question the maamar raises

The Sages annulled the mitzvah of shofar outside the Temple on Shabbat. The shofar is a very lofty Biblical mitzvah. But the reason given is only a "gzeirah of Rabbah" — a simple rabbinic concern (carrying the shofar and transgressing on Shabbat). How can a "small" rabbinic reason cancel such a great Biblical mitzvah? The Tzemach Tzedek raises a similar question: two verses of the Torah seem to contradict each other about "a remembrance of blowing" and "a day of actual blowing."

Central theme (3 lines)

Shabbat has its own delight (oneg Shabbat, עונג שבת). That delight already accomplishes, from within, what the shofar would accomplish. So nothing is missing without the shofar — but Torah (the verses) is still needed to bring that light down into the world below.

The thread of the maamar

  1. (א) The Mishnah says: on a Shabbat-Rosh Hashanah, they would blow in the Mikdash, not in the Medina. Since the Torah is eternal, this carries a spiritual meaning that always applies: inside every Jew there is an inner "Mikdash" and an outer "Medina."
  2. (ב) The main question: why annul such a lofty mitzvah outside the Temple, only because of a rabbinic concern (gzeirat Rabbah, גזירת רבה — the concern of carrying the shofar on Shabbat)? The Alter Rebbe first dwells at length on the greatness of the shofar, and only afterwards explains why nothing is missing without it.
  3. (ג) A preparatory answer: the mitzvah of shofar is a "general mitzvah" (mitzvah kelalit, מצוה כללית). Since the month of Tishrei is "sated with everything" (משובע בכל) and nourishes the entire year, the mitzvot of Tishrei — and the shofar more than all of them — affect the whole year, not only that day.
  4. The three calls of the shofar (according to the Rambam) correspond to three parts of the tefillah (תפילה): "Awake, you sleepers" = מלכיות (accepting the King); "Remember your Creator" = זכרונות; "Look into your souls, better your ways" = שופרות (from "שפר", to improve).
  5. (ד) To crown G-d as King ("התמליכוני עליכם") one needs, on one side, a separate "people" (אין מלך בלא עם — there is no king without a people). On the other side, on Rosh Hashanah everything returns to its root — and that is aroused only from G-d's innermost essence, not from mere external revelations.
  6. This is why, from Elul on, we say Psalm 27 ("בקשו פני" — seek My face). That psalm speaks of the innermost delight (ta'anug). "Shofar" is also read as "שפר" — beauty, delight.
  7. This delight of G-d's Kingship is like a king's pleasure in being king, purely from his own greatness, not from ruling over others. From that inner delight descends the light that gives life to all creatures: "reign over the whole world in Your glory."
  8. Accepting G-d's kingship is "willingly" (ברצון), but reaching all the way to the innermost root of the will. This inner surrender must also show itself outwardly. That is why the cry of the heart is not enough: it needs the act of blowing, a simple sound, on an animal's horn — showing total surrender, "like an animal, man and animal You save" (אדם ובהמה תושיע).
  9. (ה) Here comes the central answer: why is the shofar not blown when Rosh Hashanah falls on Shabbat? Because the delight of Shabbat itself ("and you shall call the Shabbat a delight") already draws down everything the shofar would draw down — including the "new light" that is renewed each Rosh Hashanah.
  10. Even so, we still say the verses of Malchuyot Zichronot Shofrot. The reason: Torah has an advantage over the mitzvot. A mitzvah only arouses the light up above. Only Torah — which is like a ruling that actually establishes reality — brings that light down below, "in vessels" (אורות בכלים).
  11. (ו) The Tzemach Tzedek notes two verses that seem to contradict: "שבתון זכרון תרועה" (a remembrance of blowing) and "יום תרועה יהיה לכם" (a day of actual blowing). The Gemara resolves it: the first speaks of Shabbat, the second of a weekday.
  12. The Tzemach Tzedek's question: but the prohibition to blow on Shabbat is only rabbinic — how can a Biblical verse already speak of "zichron" before the prohibition even exists? The answer: even before the decree, when they actually did blow in the Temple on Shabbat, that blowing was already only a "remembrance" — because what determines this is the very nature of Shabbat, not the prohibition.
  13. A deeper explanation: the blowing (teruah, תרועה) represents Midat HaDin (מדת הדין), the attribute of Judgment — "עלה אלקים בתרועה". The delight of Shabbat shines so strongly that this Din does not even become judgment — immediately afterwards comes the Name of Mercy (הוי'). That is why blowing on Shabbat never carries the "din" of a weekday.
  14. (ז) Even so, in the Temple they did blow in fact. Why? Because in the Temple — and in the "inner temple" of every Jew, the innermost heart (always awake even in exile: "I sleep, but my heart is awake") — something is drawn down from an even higher level.
  15. That higher level reaches also the "Medina": the outer faculties of every Jew (intellect, emotion, action), through the verses of Shofrot. They end with the shofar of the future, the shofar of Mashiach (משיח) — because everything that will come in the future is already contained, hidden, in the giving of the Torah at Sinai.
  16. (ח) Summary: on a Shabbat-Rosh Hashanah, Shabbat itself (holy "on its own," מקדשא וקיימא) already accomplishes everything the shofar would accomplish — and in an even more complete way.
  17. Afterwards, by saying the verses of Malchuyot Zichronot Shofrot, that light is brought down below, "in vessels," in a visible way — for the Torah was given here on earth, it does not remain only in the heavens.
  18. The final result: Israel and G-d become "one single reality" (ישראל וקדשא בריך הוא כולא חד). Everything flows into "a good writing and sealing, a good and sweet year" — a blessing said from the very first tefillah of Rosh Hashanah, with its root already in Rosh Chodesh Elul.

Key concepts

Where people get stuck

Shofar and the Infinite-world connection

PARTIAL.

The maamar does not use the word "Ein Sof" and does not explicitly say "the shofar connects the Infinite to the world by being a mitzvah."

But the underlying idea is very similar: the innermost and most essential level of G-d (which elsewhere is called Atzmus/Ein Sof) descends and reaches the lowest world.

A passage from ot Translation: "From there, from the dimension of the innerness and essence of the delight, there flows an influence of Divine light from above to give life to the creatures below."

A passage from ot ה (near the end, ot יט in the text): "לעולם, שבעולם התחתון שאין תחתון למטה הימנו, נמשך ופועל פנימיות התענוג האלקי העליון בגילוי" Translation: "...to the world, the lowest world, than which there is none lower — there the innerness of the supernal Divine delight flows and acts, in a revealed way."

An important difference: in this particular maamar, the one that "brings down" the light to the world below — in a year when Rosh Hashanah falls on Shabbat — is the Torah (the verses of Shofrot), not the physical blowing of the shofar. The shofar itself is what carries this function in ordinary years.

Practical lesson for Rosh Hashanah

When Rosh Hashanah falls on Shabbat, we do not blow the shofar — and nothing is lost. Shabbat itself, with its joy and its delight (oneg Shabbat), already accomplishes the deepest effect of the shofar. Even so, we pay special attention to the verses of Malchuyot, Zichronot and Shofrot in Musaf — they are what actually brings that light into concrete life. This teaches that accepting G-d as King is not only an inner feeling: it also has to show itself outwardly, in action. Even in spiritual exile, the inner heart of a Jew is always awake — and from that, renewal can flow all the way out to the most external actions.

Lines to remember

And you shall call the Shabbat a delight" (Yeshayahu 58:13). The delight of Shabbat already contains what the shofar would have come to accomplish.
Say before Me Malchuyot, so that you crown Me over you... [and] by means of what? By means of the shofar" (Gemara, Rosh Hashanah).
Israel and the Holy One, blessed be He, are one single [reality]." The final result of the whole process of the maamar.

This is a study summary of the maamar (מאמר), not a passage from the maamar itself.

In one line

Rosh Hashanah is not great because it is "day 1" of creation. It is great because on it Adam was born, the purpose of the whole creation. That is why it is called "beginning" (תחלה, techilah) — something higher than "first" or "head" (ראש, rosh).

Fact sheet

The question the maamar raises

Rosh Hashanah (1 Tishrei) is the second day of the creation of the world — Adam was created on the 6th day, which corresponds to 1 Tishrei. So how can the tefillah call this day "the beginning of Your works"? And there is more: the verse itself, right afterwards, calls this day "a remembrance of the first day" — that is, it admits that it is NOT the first day, only a remembrance of it. This looks like a contradiction between the beginning and the end of the same sentence.

Central theme

Rosh Hashanah is called "beginning" (תחלה) because on it Adam Harishon (אדם הראשון, the first man) was born — and Adam is the purpose of the whole creation, not just one more day of it. "Beginning" (תחלה) is a higher level than "head" (ראש): the head belongs to the body and extends into it; the beginning is separate, distant, and has only a small connection to what comes after it. That small connection, however, comes down through the avodah (עבודה, spiritual work) of the people of Israel — in Torah, prayer and teshuvah (תשובה, return) — until it reaches this world, and that is why the "first day" of creation also gains value and becomes a "remembrance".

The thread of the maamar

  1. (Opening) The Rebbe quotes the phrase from Musaf and shows the contradiction: "the beginning of Your works" versus "a remembrance of the first day" — if it is a remembrance, it is not the day itself.
  2. He also asks why the tefillah says "זה היום" (THIS day) and not simply "היום" (the day), as happens in other verses of the Torah.
  3. He recalls that there are two traditional explanations of "a remembrance of the first day": (a) Rosh Hashanah continues and extends the light of the first day; (b) the first day, on its own, would fall into forgetfulness — and it is Rosh Hashanah that rescues it and turns it into a remembrance.
  4. (Ot ב) The Rebbe answers: Rosh Hashanah is the day on which Adam was created (the 6th day of creation, but 1 Tishrei). The whole creation existed FOR THE SAKE OF the human being — like a king who prepares palace and banquet before bringing in the guest, so that everything is already ready.
  5. This is true of Adam the first man, but also of every Jew: every Jewish soul carries a part of the soul of Adam Harishon, which is why the Jewish people are called "אדם" (adam).
  6. (Ot ג) Because of this greatness — being the day of Adam's creation — Rosh Hashanah is called "the beginning of Your works" (תחלת מעשיך), even though it is the second day.
  7. The Rebbe explains the word "תחלה" (beginning) on the basis of the maamar of תרס"ו: "beginning" is higher than "ראש" (head, rosh). The head controls the body and is connected to it (which is why Rosh Hashanah is called the "head" of the year, not the "beginning" of the year — it gives vitality to all the days of the year, as the head gives vitality to all the limbs).
  8. But there is another sense of "beginning" that is higher still: separate from the body, not belonging to it — and even so, with a small connection to it.
  9. The Rebbe brings the teaching of the Maggid of Mezritch: G-d wished to create the world so that there would be tzaddikim (righteous Jews) in every generation — like a father who "lowers himself" and speaks like a child in order to give pleasure to his young son.
  10. That is why Israel "precedes" the Torah itself and the world itself — the choice of Israel has no logical reason, it comes before any reason (like choosing the most beloved one "for no reason").
  11. But the true greatness of Israel appears precisely in the descent below — "the end of the deed was already in the thought at the beginning" (סוף מעשה במחשבה תחלה): the lower the place (this physical world), the greater the elevation achieved there through Torah and mitzvot.
  12. (Ot ד) To explain this elevation of Israel within the world, the Rebbe brings the theme of Gan Eden (גן עדן): the verse shows that "גן" (garden) and "עדן" (Eden) are two different places — a river connects and at the same time separates the two.
  13. Even within the already lowered Gan Eden (below Eden), there are infinite levels, one above the other with no comparison at all between them — divided into Beriah, Yetzirah and Asiyah
  14. Rising from one level of Gan Eden to another requires bitul (ביטול, self-nullification): first the "river of fire" (נהר דינור, Nahar Dinur), which completely nullifies the previous level; then a second bitul, caused by the revelation of the light of the higher level.
  15. (Ot ה, ו) This same pattern of bitul happens here below, in the avodah of the soul: in Torah (bitul when learning something beyond one's previous understanding), in tefillah (bitul before praying, "כובד ראש" — koved rosh, seriousness of mind) and in teshuvah (two forms: fleeing from evil, and the deeper teshuvah, in which the person nullifies himself completely and is included in G-d).
  16. (Ot ז, ח) The three levels of Gan Eden (Beriah, Yetzirah, Asiyah) also have their parallel here below. And everything that shines in Gan Eden is only a reflection (הארה, he'arah) of Eden — Eden itself, the pure and essential delight, has not yet come down; it will only be revealed in full at the Resurrection of the Dead (תחיית המתים).
  17. (Ot ט) Here the Rebbe closes the circle: the Gan Eden of each world is called "the beginning of Your works" (תחלת מעשיך) of that world — separate, yet connected by a thin thread of light that descends level by level.
  18. In the same way, Rosh Hashanah — the day of the creation of Adam and of the souls of Israel — is "the beginning of Your works": through the avodah of the souls of Israel, that "beginning" comes down and connects to the real world (מעשיך).
  19. And that is why Rosh Hashanah also becomes "a remembrance of the first day": the first day of creation, on its own, was only preparation; it is the avodah of Israel, connected to the "beginning" of Rosh Hashanah, that gives it value retroactively.
  20. The maamar ends with the practical blessing: that the year should be one of "a good writing and sealing" in everything, a year of light, of Torah-Tefillah-Teshuvah, with material abundance as well.

Shofar and the Infinite-world connection

NO. This particular maamar does not develop the theme of the shofar (שופר) as the mitzvah that connects the Ein Sof (infinite) to the world. The word "שופר" does not appear even once in the Rebbe's main text (B_texto.txt). It appears only twice in the ביאור of the editor, and only in passing:

  1. In explaining the source of the verse "יבחר לנו את נחלתנו": "(בפרק שאומרים לפני תקיעת שופר בראש השנה)" — "(in the paragraph that is said before the blowing of the shofar on Rosh Hashanah)". This is only a reference to where the verse is prayed, not a teaching about the shofar (editor's ביאור).
  2. At the end, about the fact that Rosh Hashanah תשל"ו fell on Shabbat: "הרי בשנה זו שבראש השנה חל בשבת הם נמשכים מעצמם מצד השבת עצמה" — "in this year, in which Rosh Hashanah falls on Shabbat, they [the matters of the year] are drawn down on their own, by force of Shabbat itself" (instead of needing the blowing of the shofar, which is not done on Shabbat) (editor's ביאור).

The maamar Reuben remembers — about the shofar connecting the Ein Sof to the world by being a mitzvah — is probably another maamar (perhaps on "תקעו בחודש שופר" or something similar). It is not here.

Practical lesson for Rosh Hashanah

Before praying and before doing teshuvah, a moment of bitul is needed — of sincere "emptying out", even without having sinned, simply from being in this material world. This applies on three fronts: in the study of Torah (accepting things we do not yet understand), in tefillah ("כובד ראש", beginning with seriousness and humility) and in teshuvah (not only avoiding evil, but feeling the soul truly drawing close to G-d). Every Jew should remember that he carries a part of the soul of Adam Harishon — which is why his personal avodah, however small it may seem, has weight upon the entire world. The "narrowness" (המצר) of the avodah in these days is not an obstacle — it is the very path to opening a "wide space" (מרחב), spiritual and material, in the new year.

Lines to remember

This is the day, the beginning of Your works, a remembrance of the first day."
Beginning' is higher than the level of 'head'."
From the narrow place I called out to G-d... He answered me with expanse."

This is a study summary of the maamar (מאמר), not a passage from the maamar itself.

In one line

Teshuvah (תשובה, return to G-d) works by an instantaneous leap, not by a gradual process. That leap is possible only because, deep down, every Jew is called "Israel" — a name the sin never touches.

Fact sheet

The question the maamar raises

The prophet is speaking about teshuvah for a serious sin (זדונות, zedonot, done on purpose). Why does he call the people "ישראל" (Israel, the highest name) and not "יעקב" (Yaakov, a name tied to weakness)? Besides that, the verse seems to repeat the obvious: asking to "take words", then asking for forgiveness again, and ending with something apparently small (lips instead of sacrifices). The maamar explains why each of these parts is necessary and progressive.

Central theme

Teshuvah is not a slow step-by-step like the rest of spiritual service. It is a leap (דילוג, dilug) that comes from a part of the soul called "ישראל", which is never touched by sin. That is why the same leap lends its strength to everything: to the regret, to the study of Torah, to the mitzvot, and it even turns the sin itself into a merit.

The thread of the maamar

  1. (§7-9) Question 1: why "שובה ישראל" and not "שובה יעקב"? Israel is a name of greatness ("שרית" — you have prevailed); Yaakov comes from "עקב", the heel, the lowest place.
  2. (§9) It becomes even stranger because it is said "ולא ראה בישראל" (no iniquity is seen in Israel) — Israel should not even have a failing, not even a shegagah (שגגה, an unintentional error).
  3. (§10) Question 2: if "שובה ישראל" already includes the confession (vidui, וידוי), why does the verse still ask "קחו עמכם דברים" (take with you words)?
  4. (§12) Question 3: if the person has already done teshuvah, the sins have already been forgiven — why ask again "כל תשא עון" (forgive all iniquity)?
  5. (§14) Question 4: why end with something that looks smaller — lips instead of sacrifices (bulls) — after so many elevated steps?
  6. (§15) General answer: teshuvah happens "בשעתא חדא וברגעא חדא" — in a single hour, in a single moment — because it is a work done "בחילא יתיר", with extra force, a leap and not a gradual process.
  7. (§15) In teshuvah out of great love (מאהבה רבה), the leap is greater still: the intentional sins themselves become merits, merits even greater than those of the righteous.
  8. (§17-18) The Alter Rebbe explains why "תכלית חכמה תשובה ומעשים טובים" (the goal of wisdom is teshuvah and good deeds) — teshuvah comes first because it is what makes the good deeds truly good and luminous.
  9. (§18) That same power of leaping passes from teshuvah into the study of Torah and the keeping of the mitzvot — like Rabbi Zeira, who kept a hundred fasts in order to forget the Talmud Bavli and be able to learn the Talmud Yerushalmi on a higher level.
  10. (§18-19) For this reason, in the mitzvot too one must go beyond measure: "בכל לבבך ובכל נפשך ובכל מאדך" — with all your heart, all your soul and "all your very much", without limit.
  11. (§19) An important difference: in Torah and mitzvot the leap is an ascent beyond comparison within holiness; in teshuvah the leap comes from the opposite side — from the sin all the way to holiness.
  12. (§21-22) Where does this power of leaping come from? From the "בחינת ישראל" (bechinat Yisrael, the dimension/name Israel) that exists in the soul of every Jew.
  13. (§22) That is why it says "שובה ישראל": the strength to return comes precisely from that dimension, which remains present even after the sin — "ישראל אף על פי שחטא ישראל הוא" (Israel, even though it has sinned, is still Israel).
  14. (§22) This dimension of Israel, being the essence of the person, also acts upon the dimension of Yaakov (the lower level, tied to practical action) and manages to repair it.
  15. (§22-23) That is why the verse says only "כשלת" (you have stumbled), a gentle word: the sin reaches only the "foot" (Yaakov), never the "head" (Israel), which always stays whole.
  16. (§23) But precisely because the person is so elevated at his root, even a small stumble weighs more than a great failing would seem to weigh in someone on the level of Yaakov — and therefore the teshuvah must be done with all one's force.
  17. (§25-27) Question 2 answered: nullifying the "I" (bitul hametziut, ביטול המציאות) is not enough on its own; one also needs "קחו עמכם דברים" — vidui with words, with letters — because the final goal of teshuvah is to return to keeping Torah and mitzvot with exact precision (down to the little letters and the crownlets of the written text).
  18. (§28) Question 3 answered: "אמרו אליו כל תשא עון" is not only a request for forgiveness — it asks that the sin itself be carried and transformed into a merit, because G-d is "כל" (the All, which includes everything), and therefore can turn everything, even the sin, into something good.
  19. (§30-31) Question 4 answered: "ונשלמה פרים שפתינו" — the words of the mouth (tefillah, תפילה, prayer) do not replace the sacrifices because they are something lesser, but because they are a higher level: they reach "פני הוי'" (the face of G-d), above even the physical sacrifices.
  20. (§32-35) Conclusion: the teshuvah of Shabbat Shuvah repairs all the Shabbatot of the year that has passed and elevates those of the year to come — arriving at the final promise: "ישראל תשובין הן ומיד עושין תשובה נגאלין" (as soon as Israel does teshuvah, they are redeemed), with the building of the third Temple.

Shofar and the Infinite-world connection

NO. This maamar does not mention שופר (shofar) and does not discuss the connection between the Ein Sof (אין סוף, the Infinite) and the world through the mitzvah of the shofar. The subject of this maamar is a different one: the verse "שובה ישראל" from Hoshea, read in the haftarah of Shabbat Shuvah, and the mechanism of the "leap" (דילוג) in teshuvah. Reuben is probably remembering another maamar (most likely one about Rosh Hashanah and the mitzvah of the shofar itself) — it is worth looking among the other maamarim of the same booklet (the Erev Rosh Hashanah maamar or the Zeh Hayom maamar) or of other years.

Practical lesson for Rosh Hashanah

Even someone who feels he "stumbled" during the year kept his deepest root intact — the "Israel" within him was never touched by the sin. That is why teshuvah can — and should — be done all at once, in a single instant of sincere decision, without waiting for a long process. After that inner leap, one must "take words": express it in concrete speech (vidui, tefillah) and return to the exact practice of Torah and mitzvot. It is worth asking G-d not only to erase the past, but to transform what was done wrong into strength for the good. The teshuvah done on this Shabbat (Shabbat Shuvah) and in these days has an effect on the entire year, past and future.

Lines to remember

Return, Israel, unto Havayeh your G-d, for you have stumbled in your sin."
Israel, even though it has sinned, is still Israel."
In a single hour and in a single moment" (the way teshuvah happens, in one leap).
